Pink Viagra: limited effectiveness with side effects
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday approved the marketing of the first "female 비아그라" after two refusals in 2010 and 2013. This little pink pill, containing flibanserin, will be marketed under Addyi's name.
"This clearance gives women with low sexual desire a treatment option," said Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
According to several studies, nearly 40% of premenopausal women suffer from a lack of sexual desire. A loss of libido not resulting from drug treatment, a physiological or psychiatric disorder. “It is a frequent phenomenon in humans, and in women in particular, underlines Dr. Sylvain Mimoun, gynecologist-andrologist at Cochin Hospital. Lack of desire is the hardest symptom to deal with.”
This little pink pill then presents itself as a revolutionary drug capable of solving sexual dysfunctions. However, this is far from being the case. As the FDA points out, about 10% of women who took Addyi reported improved sex and desire compared to women on placebo.
“This product is described as an aphrodisiac in the sense of a sexual stimulant when in reality it is a disinhibitorallowing certain blockages to be lifted,” explains the specialist. Thus, if these brakes are (too) numerous, it is possible that the drug will be ineffective. “If a woman repeatedly complains of having little or no sexual desire, she can tell herself that this drug is capable of solving her problems. But we must not be in all or nothing and believe in miracles. This treatment will allow a gradual return of desire,” says Dr. Mimoun.
In addition, American experts insist on the risk of interaction with alcohol and its side effects . Addyi can cause a drop in blood pressure, dizziness and loss of consciousness. Increased risks with alcohol consumption and 비아그라 drugs that inhibit CYP 3A4 such as antiretrovirals, antiepileptics or certain cardiovascular drugs. They also indicate that treatment should be discontinued if no improvement has appeared after 8 weeks.
